Lights and mirrors no comments
Put a good reading light by your bed, by your chaise longue and above or on your dressing table. Many people do not realize it is the object reflected that should be lighted, not the mirror. Remember this and study your own problem for good light is not expensive. Light coming from above a mirror is perhaps the best. A tall candlestick or bracket on each side of a mirror with a 60 watt bulb is adequate. Lamps should be high enough to throw light on a book, if used for reading.
A long mirror in a bedroom is a luxury within reach. Place one on a door or make a decorative feature of a triple mirror. In lieu of a dressing table use a small table, like a night table, in front of each of the side mirrors, leaving the center mirror free. Place a light over the center mirror, put dressing articles on the small tables, use a stool between the tables and you have a dressing arrangement with a floor length mirror which is most decorative and a joy to use! Size of the room no comments
Is it to be primarily a sleeping room, or is it to be used for day activities such as sewing and writing? The size of the room has a lot to do with this, of course for if beds and bureaus take up too much space, a desk, sewing table, chaise lounge, and easy chairs are crowded out. With today carefully designed small scale furniture often doing a double duty job, it is amazing what can be put both attractively and comfortably into a small room. “But I must use what I have”, you say. Well, that’s all right. You must adjust at yourself to the type of the furniture you have, unless you can improve it by bleaching, painting, refinishing or slip covering. As a rule one of these is possible and you can work out a pretty room by giving old furniture a new face.
“But the question of money?” I’m ready to admit that money is a question. But as I say throughout this book, it’s not money but taste that counts. Therefore with imagination some energy and very little money you can get delightful result. Don’t aim at the wrong thing. Of you have a cottage don’t aim at a palace. Informal rooms no comments
In informal rooms they are hung against the glass and just escape the window sill. On shallow windows they just cover the sill or frame of window.
Carpet with a pattern is a wise choice for a dining room, as it will not show spots, crumbs or usage as easily as a plain carpet does. Self tone weaves twisted weaves and many of the two or three toned rough or homespun looking weaves are recommended.
Do not be afraid of color. Experiment with it, but don’t just be safe. Get together the colors you like; a sample of the wallpaper, a yard length of the curtain materials, upholstery of chairs, a swatch of the rug. Pin up the paper and fabrics and leave them all in place over night anyway. See the effect with a fresh eye. If you are in doubt, look further.
