Here is a bedroom, modern in feeling but as warm and friendly as the American provincial pieces which inspired the design of the blond wood furniture. The room follows the rules of modern decorating in having plain, warm gray (almost beige) walls, woodwork and bedspread, relieved with the pillows of a marigold tone, which is also used for the stool. One pillow and the lamp shades are white, the floral picture above the bed picking up the different colors in the room.

In the photograph opposite, the background as well as the furniture creates the atmosphere of a modern room. Wall surfaces are plain and may be in wood veneer or in a solid color as here. This really is important, and yet I find many women buying draperies, for instance, without considering type of furniture, this is frequently true, I think, because few of us start from scratch in furnishings. Oh, I just have a room, and want to fix it up, you say, and because the rug is shabby you buy a new rug, or replace curtains or whatever it is you need, without thinking of the room as unit.

This is a mistake. Think of the type you want, of what furnishings you have toward that ideal, and what you need to do to attain it. I say all this in relation to the small bedroom, because it is one of the easiest rooms to turn into whatever type you want or whatever type the furniture you have permits. Wallpaper may be a very important factor. If you are starting from scratch determine your type of room, then choose your wallpaper and then your furniture.
